Social Evaluation
What is a social evaluation and why do we do it? Well, we do it because we take safety very seriously. Not all dogs can or should be allowed to play in a group situation with other dogs. Doggie daycare is for friendly, social dogs with a fairly well balanced personality. It is not a place for dogs that are aggressive to other dogs or people. It is also not suitable for dogs that are bullies or so shy that they really would prefer not to play with other dogs. Social evaluation is the screening process we use to evaluate if your dog is a good fit for our daycare. Our primary concern is safety for all dogs, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Our social evaluation begins with the enrollment paperwork we have you submit. The Pet Personality Profile has been designed to tell us a lot about your dog and the household it lives in. All of the information gleaned from this gives us clues as to what your dog’s personality is like and issues that it may have. We use this information to map out a test that enables us to evaluate your dog’s strengths and weaknesses. Once our trainers have reviewed this paperwork, you will be contacted to schedule a time when both you and your dog can come for the social evaluation. Why do we want you there? Well, we want our pet parents to understand dog behavior, what we are looking for and why daycare is or is not a good fit for their dog.
Your dog will be evaluated first by people only, other dogs will then be introduced to your dog one at a time. Individual dogs being used for the test will be determined by your paperwork as well as what we see in person prior to bringing in the first tester dog. After we have introduced a variety of dogs to your dog, one at a time, all of the dogs will be released in a group together for group interaction. This process also enables us to determine which play floor is the best fit for your dog.
By the time we complete the test, you will join us in knowing a great deal about your dog’s personality. You will know any issues we anticipate and how we intend to manage your dog’s visits to accommodate those issues.
What happens if your dog is not suitable for daycare? Well, that depends on the reasons. If your dog is shy or bordering on being a bully, we have programs available to help them work through these issues and quite probably become a good fit for daycare. If your dog shows aggressive behavior we will recommend a course of action to help you resolve those issues. If successful, we can retest to see if your dog could then succeed in a daycare setting.
